Not every car enthusiast thinks about the safety of the underbody of the car. More often than not, car enthusiasts who purchase or already own a used car are puzzled by this question. The bottom of a new car almost always has scratches, cracks and even holes caused by driving on wet roads, tall grass, gravel, sand, etc.
Despite the fact that the new car does not have the above-mentioned disadvantages, its underbody needs protection no less. Protective treatment of the bottom occurs in production. In the case of Russian cars, this process is most often not provided for in production.
Why do you need to treat the underbody of your car with a protective agent?
Small scratches and chips on the bottom of the car do not have the best effect on strength. Due to moisture and dirt, they will inevitably begin to increase in size, rust will appear, and the bottom of the car will finally become unusable. Damage to the bottom can negatively affect the operation of the chassis, shock absorbers and many other parts. To prevent this, and on the contrary, to increase the service life of the car, it is necessary to regularly treat it with a protective compound.
What to process? Having assessed the importance of treatment, it is also important to choose the appropriate protective agent. Studying the composition will help with this.
Products in the form of a thick mass (mastic) contain rubber, bitumen or resin and require preheating before use. Protective mastics also contain special fibers and graphite. Thanks to its plasticity, the mastic is easy to spread over the bottom in a layer of the required thickness.
A protective substance based on drying oil, oils and components that stop corrosion is called Movil and acts as a good protection against the spread of rust on the bottom of the car. The structure of Movil is quite liquid (compared to mastic), so it easily penetrates into small cracks and scratches and forms a water-repellent film. However, the fluidity of Movil complicates the process of applying a layer of the required thickness. For ease of use, Movil is often produced in aerosol cans. Only metal surfaces can be coated with this product. Rubber parts (seals, covers) will become unusable from its impact.
Products containing orthophosphoric acid are classified as converters. They are good for treating the bottom, which has already suffered from rust. The converter must be applied to a clean, dry bottom by spraying. After its interaction with iron oxides, a protective layer is formed, which must be covered with Movil or mastic.
As noted, all products that protect the underbody of a car from external factors are made on the basis of chemical components. It is very important that these components, while eliminating dirt and rust, do not destroy the paintwork of the bottom. The degree of their impact on the coating is noted in the instructions for the protective agent.
How to treat the bottom? There is no clear answer to this question. Each car enthusiast makes a decision based on his own experience and financial situation. In specialized workshops, professionals will carry out the treatment much faster, using special equipment and substances suitable for a specific car. However, it won’t be cheap.
If a car enthusiast has at his disposal a site with a special pit for inspecting a car, free time and a sufficient amount of knowledge, he is quite capable of carrying out the treatment on his own.
First you need to wash and dry the underbody of the car. After a careful inspection, you can proceed to processing the wheel arches and the bottom of the car, strictly following the instructions. It is allowed to use the car only after the compounds used for protection have completely dried. In general, this will take at least a day.
Underbody protection is a prerequisite for long vehicle service and safe driving. Therefore, it is best to carry out treatment with protective compounds for preventive purposes at least once every two years, without waiting for problems to arise.
