Starting the engine often requires support from the main battery. Stationary charging and starting devices can be used in the garage. But what to do if the battery is low in a parking lot, on the road, in the forest? A booster for starting a car can be such a help.

The device contains a pre-charged lithium-polymer battery, wires for connection to the vehicle’s power supply and controls. The word booster means additional assistance in any power system, in this case the main battery of the car.

Lithium polymer batteries

Energy storage devices with high discharge current were initially widespread in radio-controlled models and unmanned aerial vehicles. Lithium polymer batteries are used in household and computer equipment.

In recent years, Li-pol batteries have been improved by using new polymers as the electrolyte. This ensured improvements in critical battery parameters:

  • the number of work cycles increased to 600-800;
  • charging time has been reduced to two hours;
  • the maximum current under short-term load increased to 50C, where C is the battery capacity.

The disadvantages of the entire lithium group are also inherent in Li-pol batteries:

  • short circuit mode leads to overheating and destruction of components;
  • overcharging is harmful, which requires a scrupulous attitude to the charging process;
  • overheating above 60 degrees is unacceptable, including due to prolonged operation in high-discharge mode;
  • depressurization of the housing leads to loss of performance;
  • Storing it in a discharged state causes the battery to fail without the possibility of recovery.

Low weight and small dimensions with high capacity are properties that have contributed to the use of such batteries in a wide variety of devices and units.

Device for autonomous vehicle starting

When choosing a booster, the main criterion is the starting current. Portable devices weighing 0.4-0.8 kg provide a short-term load current of 200-850 A. They are placed in the glove compartment or tool box.

Starting cannot be performed with the on-board battery disconnected. An autonomous starting device can only provide its initial recharging and assistance in rotating the shaft with the starter. The main battery should not be completely discharged, and the booster drive should not have a charge of less than 60%.

The connection is made to the terminals of the car battery, observing polarity. Boosters usually have protection against incorrect connection.

Voltage is supplied through the cigarette lighter only for recharging. Starting through this circuit is not possible. The cigarette lighter power supply is protected by a fuse of no more than 20 A and it will simply burn out when started.

Small-sized autonomous jump starters have additional connectors for charging and powering various devices, which is convenient on the road.

Autonomous starting devices with a starting current of up to 2000 A are used to start engines of tractors, trucks, and buses. Their design requires transportation on transport wheels, as they have significant dimensions and weight up to 20 kg. The battery capacity allows for about ten starts without recharging. Available in 12 V and 24 V output voltages.

Powerful autonomous starting-charging devices are equipped with technical assistance teams of motor vehicle convoys and car service stations.

It is important to carefully study the attached instructions. Compliance with its rules will ensure long-term operation of the device.
