The injector is one of the few elements that is difficult to damage due to poor driving style. But this does not mean that the driver does not affect its durability. First of all, you need to refuel with good fuel and take care to regularly replace the fuel filter.

The introduction of the Common Rail system revolutionized the use of diesel engines. The attitude of drivers towards them has radically changed. There is nothing strange about this, because the method of fuel supply has changed – now it is the responsibility of an injection pump, which measures the required amount of fuel and supplies it to the combustion chamber in a timely manner. The pump is controlled mechanically or electronically. Common rail injection is similar to multi-point gasoline injection: the pump takes care of delivering fuel at a certain pressure, and the computer decides for how long and at what point the injectors need to be opened.

Of course, free cheese only comes in a mousetrap. Individual diesel engine components (turbochargers, dual-mass wheels, particulate filters, EGR valves) and, of course, the injectors themselves have become very expensive to repair. Another drawback is the short list of manufacturers, including actually only Bosch, Delphi, Denso and Siemens. For example, if a model is equipped with a Bosch system, the driver has no other option but to buy parts from that manufacturer only.

How can you tell if your injectors are worn out or broken? One of the symptoms is a sharp or gradual increase in fuel consumption. Another sign is black smoke from the exhaust pipe. A diesel engine has the right to leave a small cloud sometimes, but black clouds of smoke appearing every time you press the gas pedal are a cause for concern, and the first suspicion should fall on the injectors. It is also necessary to pay attention to uneven engine operation, loss of power and increased noise.Although such malfunctions, of course, can be caused by completely different problems with the motor. Diagnostics of injectors in a car is an ambiguous procedure. The best control method is to place them on a stand.

If a malfunction is suspected, it is necessary to dismantle the injectors and take them to a reliable auto repair shop. In most cases, the dismantling procedure will not cause any problems, but it may require removing the valve cover or other parts, so before starting the repair it is worth asking whether these costs are included in the quoted price. When installing injectors, it is necessary to use new gaskets, because they are disposable.
